It is a cycle involving biological, geological, and chemical processes in which carbon atoms are exchanged between the Earth's biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and the atmosphere. Most of the remainder becomes dissolved in seawater. Every living thing on Earth is comprised of a small percentage of carbon. The ocean removes about half the extra carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and increased plant growth removes more through photosynthesis, but the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is still rising.
