Gene is introduced to Brinker's dad, and says that he has joined the Navy. Or you could live your life and just try to be human and not fuck anyone over any more than you have to. This book is a bit heavy handed on the imagery also, beginning with a snotty group at a prep school. On a personal level, it resonates with me because I too, did something incredibly ill conceived a couple of years ago, and just like Gene Forrester, it hangs over my head like the sword of Damocles: a silent, corrosive necrotisis of the soul. The Devon School represents privilege and a separation of social classes. Germany instigated the war, and shortly afterward was joined by Japan and Italy.
According to Emerson's Self-Reliance, though, this nonconformist, independent stance is the only thing that can bring a person peace. In fact, while I am sure they are out there, I don't think I have ever met anyone who read this and it was not required for school. . In retrospect I probably had no business reading such a book at such an early age. Then one day in accident Finny fell from a tree and broke his legs and with it his Olympic dreams. And in the end, there is pain, death, forgiveness and unexpected consequences. Finny cites Lepellier as an unreachable witness. There is always one who is more outgoing, more apt to take risks. Great and tragic changes traditionally take place under or in such trees. John Knowles was able to capture the subtle goal and essence of his novel by titling it A Separate Peace.
Gene learns the profound meaning of friendship when he pushes Phineas out of the tree. He left home at fifteen to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, an exclusive boarding school located in New Hampshire. This rivalry begins with Gene's jealousy towards Finny. The boys have a love hate relationship, which becomes the base of the problems throughout the book. Devon's initial isolation from the rest of the world is as important as its peaceful atmosphere. However, if you never get past that point, life isn't much worth living.
It was that summer that I realized I had fallen in love with Exeter. It was required reading - we were not given a choice on reading it. How can he hate him, when he loves him so much? It is the voice of simple self-respect. Here's a book that was first published in 1959 and which I read when I was sixteen and now fifty or so years later I read again.
